Fenham Carr
Until very recently this 6.3 hectares (15.6 acres) extension to Williamson Park was a part of the Lancaster Moor Hospital estate. The history of the site dates back to the reign of King George III, the original plan was to build at Wigan, but when this project failed to materialise, the Corporation of Lancaster presented a small plot of 5 acres to the County Palatine for the new Asylum.
There are no records to indicate that the land now used as a park, had been laid out to any particular purpose, the Ordnance Survey of 1895 indicates all the physical features that are present today. [the small reservoir enclosed by the stone wall in the centre of the area was built
and remained in use for fire fighting purposes, there is no access
for visitors] It is likely that the Asylum expanded, and as the
care of the mentally ill became more sympathetic, a pleasant parkland
walk was seen as a beneficial therapeutic activity for the patients.
