Orienteering Course
The orienteering course is laid out through the splendidly scenic Gardens and Woodland areas of Williamson Park. The course has several different levels of difficulty and so is popular both with families who have not done this before, school groups and Army cadets. The initial stages are wheelchair accessible.
A detailed map of the park is contained in the Orienteering booklet (£1). This is obtainable from the shop in the Pavilion building by the Ashton Memorial. If you are part of a larger group it is recommended that you must pre-book on 01524 33318. There is a nominal fee for this.
And when you finish why not relax with a well-deserved rest in the Pavilion Café, which serves teas, cakes and home made lunches.

Bug Hunt
This has turned out to be a very popular and fun game for children and adults alike. The booklet for the Bug Hunt is available in the shop for 25p. In it a map guides you around the Park in your hunt for the Bugs. You can make it as long or short as you like, and once found the Bugs make great things to look for time and time again on your visits to the Park.
The Bugs are depicted on very attractive discs set in the ground. Hunt in the leaf litter for the Dragonfly near the Lake or Search for the Spider in the Shrubbery!
You need to be observant - many Bugs do not like to be found!

The Lancaster Sundial
Have you ever wondered how a sundial works? Want to be a Gnomon? Would you like to know how to make a Sundial? Learn how a sundial works and visit the Park on a sunny day. Here you can become the human gnomon (the bit that sticks up in the middle) and your shadow will tell the time. No need to be late home for tea now.
Following the installation of the fabulous Lancaster Sundial in Williamson Park several booklets and cut-out cards are available from the shop in the Pavilion. With them you can make your own Lancaster sundial, or you can make one from one of those unwanted CD's! But take care - making a sundial is not as easy as it at first might appear. Did you know that for each town you need a different angle on a sundial? Or that in February a sundial is over 10 minutes slower than a watch but can be 15 minutes faster in November! Pick up your Sun Dial Pack to find out.

Maths Trail
Combine your visit to our splendid gardens and through our woodland walks with a brain boggling Maths Trail. Exercise your Grey Matter while you exercise your legs. You need to be observant and cunning! It is all here for any budding mathematician, you need to work out distances, estimate angles, measure and calculate. If the lampposts are 25m apart how far have you walked?
The Maths Trail has been designed for use with children 7 - 13, but it is a challenge for all. Do as much or as little as you like. The Trail is split up into several sections, which makes it ideal to use again and again. Booklets are available from the shop in the Pavilion. Afterwards try a work-out in the Pavilion Café, which serves excellent teas, cakes and light lunches.
